Synology expands ActiveProtect with cloud recovery

Synology has launched ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 for its ActiveProtect data protection appliances, expanding the range of platforms the software can protect.
The release adds support for Amazon EC2, Azure VM, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV, and Google Workspace. It also introduces cross-platform recovery, allowing workloads to be backed up in one environment and restored in another.
The feature is intended to support both disaster recovery and workload migration across hybrid infrastructure, while helping organisations manage protection across more of their systems from a single platform.
Backup destination options have also expanded. ActiveProtect Vault now works with a broader range of Synology NAS models, and Azure Blob Storage has been added as a supported target for copy and tiering.
The update also changes how cloud-stored backups can be used in recovery. Backups held in Amazon S3 Storage or Azure Blob Storage can now be restored directly into Amazon EC2 or Azure VM without first passing through on-premises hardware.
That removes a step from cloud disaster recovery workflows and shortens the path to restoration after an outage or incident. The update also adds software-based storage encryption at the volume level to protect data at rest.
Synology said backup data and system configurations would remain inaccessible if drives were stolen or hardware lost. The company also outlined further security features planned for the next software update.
Security changes
Version 2.1 is set to add anomaly detection based on AI and machine learning. The system will monitor each backup version for changes in file behaviour, including shifts in change rate, file modifications, mass deletions, and entropy.
According to Synology, suspicious backup copies will be quarantined for administrator review. The model will learn from those outcomes to improve accuracy and reduce false positives.
The update is also due to add malware scanning before restoration through third-party antivirus tools including Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender, and ESET. If malware is found in the latest backup, an Auto Fallback feature will restore the latest clean version instead.
Synology is making ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 available for all DP-Series appliances at no extra cost, giving existing users of that hardware line the new platform support and recovery options without an added software charge.
Jia-Yu Liu outlined Synology's rationale for the update.
"Managing fragmented backup infrastructure drives up costs and slows recovery. The ActiveProtect appliance unites purpose-built storage with powerful data management software into a single, predictable investment," said Jia-Yu Liu, Executive Vice President of the Synology Data Protection Group.
Liu also described the role of the new version in the company's broader product strategy.
"APM 2.0 builds on that value, enabling organisations to safeguard their entire hybrid infrastructure through one centralised, scalable solution," said Liu.
