Indian data centre firm Yotta is increasing its AI cloud services capacity, with plans to purchase additional AI chips from US partner Nvidia worth USD $500 million. This will bring Yotta's total order tally with Nvidia to a staggering USD $1 billion, according to Yotta's Chief Executive, Sunil Gupta.
Yotta announced in December an intention to order more Nvidia chips, though it did not disclose the value of the deal nor indicate what chips would be purchased. Gupta confirmed in an interview with Reuters last week that the new order would consist of nearly 16,000 Nvidia H100 and GH200 artificial intelligence chips, with the order set to be placed by March 2025.
This comes in addition to an order already placed in the prior year for approximately 16,000 H100 chips from Nvidia, slated for delivery by July this year, Gupta stated. The burgeoning demand for Nvidia's AI chips in India proves critical for the US company, as it faces impediments in exporting certain chips to China and other nations due to international restrictions from the US.
Nvidia has already established AI partnerships with major Indian conglomerates, including Reliance Industries and Tata Group. These collaborations will see the development of cloud infrastructure, language structures, and various generative AI applications. Yotta, which belongs to the real estate group of Indian billionaire Niranjan Hiranandani, serves as a vital partner for Nvidia's operations in India and operates three significant data centre campuses located in Mumbai, Gujarat, and near New Delhi.
The surge in storage and processing needs has triggered tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon to accelerate their investments in cloud and data centre capabilities in India in recent years. Yotta's estimates anticipate AI adoption in India reaching USD $14 billion by 2030. Gupta noted that without this level of infrastructure in place, "India's AI ambition is just not possible".
The news came during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, where Nvidia's top executive, Shankar Trivedi, stated on Wednesday that Yotta is constructing an AI data centre in the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, a fresh tech hub due to go live by March. This is one of the critical events held in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state, an important checkpoint in his quest for investments before his reelection campaign later this year.
