Tessell launches DBaaS platform challenging Amazon RDS

Thu, 31st Oct 2024

Tessell has introduced its database-as-a-service (DBaaS) platform, presenting an alternative to Amazon RDS for organisations looking to reduce costs and enhance database performance.

The Tessell platform offers support for various popular database engines such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and NoSQL. Tessell aims to manage modern cloud infrastructure complexities by automating workflows and providing standardised operations with lower costs. The company claims that its platform can significantly reduce operational costs while improving performance, offering a combined benefit critical for enterprises managing large-scale and mission-critical data.

Tessell states that its value lies in its ability to deliver substantial savings through database consolidation and license optimisation. By allowing multiple databases to run on a single instance, Tessell optimises resource allocation, which in turn reduces infrastructure costs and enhances efficiency. Tessell's built-in tools for managing licenses further simplify operations and reduce dependency on third-party software, addressing both cost and operational challenges comprehensively.

According to Tessell, one of the platform's key strengths is its ability to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO). A recent study suggested that users could achieve up to 72.5% TCO savings over three years compared to Amazon RDS, through strategies such as consolidation and optimisation of compute resources. By consolidating multiple Oracle databases into fewer instances, organisations can reduce the required licenses and support costs, redirecting resources into innovative initiatives rather than maintaining existing systems.

Performance benchmarks suggest that Tessell can achieve up to 321% higher Input/Output Operations Per Second (IOPS) compared to Amazon RDS for similar workloads. This performance improvement is attributed to its advanced architecture, designed to handle simultaneous data transactions with enhanced speed and efficiency. This allows organisations with data-intensive applications to meet demanding requirements without resorting to expensive infrastructure upgrades.

Tessell addresses operational efficiency by simplifying management processes. Amazon RDS requires a one-to-one instance-to-database management approach, which can be resource-intensive. Tessell's multi-tenant architecture allows organisations to manage multiple databases within a single instance, streamlining management and reducing operational tasks. This enables companies to shift focus towards strategic initiatives rather than routine maintenance.

Along with simplification, Tessell integrates features such as backup, recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery within its platform. This unified approach reduces the need to juggle multiple tools and systems, easing operational strain and allowing database administrators to automate routine tasks. This, in turn, permits administrators to focus on improving data quality and aligning data strategies with broader business goals.

Tessell incorporates advanced DataOps and FinOps capabilities, making it suitable for multi-cloud environments. Integrated FinOps tools allow for detailed performance measurement and infrastructure optimisation, helping businesses avoid overprovisioning and reduce waste. On the DataOps front, Tessell enhances communication and workflow automation between data engineers and stakeholders, promoting agility and ensuring business outcomes align with data initiatives.

The platform offers comprehensive data management tools, including provisioning, backup, disaster recovery, and compliance. Its high-availability architecture is designed to ensure data protection and recoverability, maintaining business continuity even during outages or system failures. As companies increasingly move to the cloud, the platform's combination of performance, cost-saving features, and management tools positions it as a potential alternative to traditional DBaaS solutions like Amazon RDS.
