Tata & OpenAI forge major AI partnership for India

Fri, 20th Feb 2026

Tata Group, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and OpenAI have agreed a strategic partnership covering enterprise deployments of OpenAI tools, joint industry solutions and plans for large-scale AI infrastructure in India.

The arrangement spans Tata Group companies and TCS client work in India and other markets. It also includes a social impact programme involving the OpenAI Foundation and TCS.

Employee tools

Several thousand Tata Group employees will receive access to Enterprise ChatGPT, positioning the rollout as a way to use generative AI in day-to-day work.

TCS will also use OpenAI's Codex for software engineering, aiming to improve development outcomes.

Industry solutions

Under the partnership, OpenAI and TCS plan to build industry-specific "Agentic AI" solutions, pairing OpenAI's products with TCS sector expertise and delivery teams.

They also plan joint go-to-market activity, offering AI-powered solutions tailored to organisational context for Indian and global enterprises.

TCS will deploy, integrate and scale OpenAI platforms for customers in multiple geographies. The partnership positions TCS as a key services partner for OpenAI technology in enterprise programmes, while expanding OpenAI's reach into regulated and complex operating environments served by large systems integrators.

Infrastructure build

A separate multi-year agreement links TCS HyperVault and OpenAI on AI infrastructure in India. The initial phase calls for 100MW of capacity, with an option to scale to 1GW.

Financial terms, site locations, construction timelines and technology suppliers were not disclosed. The companies described the build as supporting next-generation AI workloads and as part of a broader ambition for India to play a larger role in global AI development.

TCS created HyperVault in 2025. The unit focuses on large-scale, AI-ready infrastructure for hyperscalers and organisations running AI workloads.

TCS said HyperVault uses green energy and plans purpose-built, liquid-cooled data centres with high rack densities. It also cited network connectivity across key cloud regions as part of the design.

Skills and youth

Alongside commercial activity, the OpenAI Foundation and TCS will collaborate on AI training and resources for young people in India. The initiative includes technology toolkits for NGOs and other youth-focused programmes.

The companies set a target of improving the livelihoods of at least one million Indian youth, but did not explain how this would be measured or which organisations would be involved.

Sam Altman, Chief Executive Officer of OpenAI, linked the agreement to wider momentum around AI use in the country.

"India is already leading the way in AI adoption, and with its talent, ambition, and strong government support, it is well placed to help shape its future. Through OpenAI for India and our partnership with Tata Group, we're working together to build the infrastructure, skills, and local partnerships needed to build AI with India, for India, and in India, so that more people across the country can access and benefit from it," said Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI.

N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, said the partnership aligns with national ambitions around AI leadership and industry change.

"This deep collaboration between OpenAI and Tata Group marks a major milestone in India's vision to become a global leader in AI. We are pleased to partner with OpenAI to create state-of-the-art AI infrastructure in India. This is a unique opportunity for OpenAI and TCS to transform industries. Together we will skill India's youth and empower them to succeed in the AI era," said N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons.

The partnership brings together a global AI developer, a large IT services group and one of India's biggest conglomerates as enterprises shift from pilot projects to broader deployment. The companies said they will pursue further work on infrastructure, customer programmes and training initiatives over the multi-year relationship.
