Veeam Kasten V7.0: Unveiling enhanced Kubernetes data protection

Wed, 8th May 2024

Veeam Software has unveiled its latest innovation, Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes V7.0. This significant new version includes over 30 novel features and enhancements, contributing to Veeam's ongoing commitment to setting advanced cybersecurity standards and exploring enterprise solutions to suit large-scale Kubernetes application platforms.

Veeam Kasten V7.0 promises rigorous security measures that satisfy the stringent requirements of the Federal Information Protection Standard (FIPS), making it especially attractive for federal sector environments. This enhanced software allows for greater protection against ransomware and broadens opportunities for enterprise integration with substantial Kubernetes platforms such as Red Hat OpenShift.

Interest in container usage continues to grow, with 59% of enterprises currently harnessing containers in production and a further 37% in the process of implementing them or in the planning stages. Responding to this market need, Veeam Kasten V7.0 promises robust container security alongside wider Kubernetes deployment. The software aids customers in safeguarding and securing their applications and data efficiently, aiding in the modernisation of their applications and migration away from conventional on-premises virtual machines.

Gaurav Rishi, Vice President of Product Management at Veeam, voiced his faith in the new software solution. He said, "Veeam Kasten delivers purpose-built and secure Kubernetes native data protection and application mobility at scale across a wide range of distributions and platforms. Proven to recover entire applications quickly and reliably and coupled with its core tenet of simplicity, Veeam Kasten gives operations and application teams confidence in their cyber resilience and the ability to protect and scale their cloud-native applications more efficiently."

The recent release is predominantly focused on cyber resilience. It introduces the very first Kubernetes-native data protection solution to support FIPS-enabled clusters. Veeam Kasten V7.0 also offers a robust defence against ransomware threats by expanding ransomware protection with Azure Blob immutability, RestorePoint visibility, and integration with Azure Sentinel. It provides secure authentication, including automatic token generation in Red Hat OpenShift environments and OIDC security enhancements.

Simultaneously, the software addresses enterprise-scale requirements by improving VM and cloud-native backups, refining support for Red Hat OpenShift image streams, container image protection and introducing disaster recovery enhancements, among other features.

Discussing the collaboration, Steve Gordon, Senior Director of Product Management for Hybrid Cloud Platforms at Red Hat, remarked, "We are excited to accelerate our long-standing relationship with Veeam to further enhance support for VMs on OpenShift, enabling our joint users to more easily implement data protection measures at scale, irrespective of how they choose to run it today or in the future."

Joep Piscaer, an analyst at TLA Tech and GigaOM, expressed his positive anticipation of the solution, asserting, "Veeam Kasten V7.0 provides customers with a rigorous, standards compliant security environment, enhances ransomware protection, and broadens enterprise integrations with support for large-scale Kubernetes environments. Their focus on scalability will also make it an ideal vendor choice for any enterprise."
